THE TOP 100 SONGS OF 2009 (Part 1)

These are the songs that didn't quite make the cut on the TOP GREATEST SONGS OF 2009. From # 125 to #101. Enjoy them!

Boom ANJULIE

Anjulie's BOOM is as sultry as an August NYC apartment in a power-out. Her bold vocals ride a seductive boom-bap beat, reeling in listeners with whispered sexuality

This Canadian singer/songwriter from Ontario caught my attention with the video of this song that was nominated for a 2009 MTV Video Music Award for "Best Breakthrough Artist in a Video.

In it, a bustier-clad Anjulie walks a tightrope between mile-high desert crags, coyly twirling an umbrella. She bats her lashes -- every line a come-on -- tip-toeing in fishnets toward a relationship she knows won't work. And then... BOOM! She falls, and the whole thing comes to undulating life.

Obsessed MARIAH CAREY

Needed more evidence that Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” was about Eminem?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhsiT3CQc2c

Carey and her husband Nick Cannon took issue with Eminem after the rapper penned the creepy ode “Bagpipes from Baghdad” to his supposed former flame Carey. Carey promptly responded with the Tricky Stewart and The-Dream-produced “Obsessed,” which finds the diva singing, “It must be weed, it must be the E… Why are you so obsessed with me? Lying that you’re sexing me.” The lyrics alone were enough of a biting retort, but it appears Carey brought the battle to the video arena.

Miss Vicky Hesketh aka LITTLE BOOTS is one of my favorite artists of 2009. She topped the BBC Sound of Music poll 2009 and received a BRITS Critics Choice nomination. With the release of her debut album HANDS she became linked to a wave of breakthrough female artists in their 20s including Lady Gaga, Ladyhawke, Florence and the Machine and Ellie Jackson of La Roux. All the awesome music interpreted by these talented ladies will be charted later on as we carry on with the countdown.

Million Dollar Bill WHITNEY HOUSTON

Do call it a COMEBACK!!
Leaving Bobby and all the "crack is whack" era behind, Whitney returned in a big way to the music media with the release of her seventh studio album I Look to You.
She even got a new anthem for all her gays, a clattering, uptempo hip-hop-inspired number in where she sings of looking for love and finding a man with potential.

Everybody!! : "If he makes you feel like a million-dollar bill, say, 'Oh, oh/ Oh, oh,' "

Heartbeat NNEKA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lulJdMKaZw&feature=related

This rapturous anthem is the first single from Nigerian-German roots singer/songwriter Nneka's second album No Longer At Ease. It was her first single to break into the German and UK charts. Many of the songs on No Longer At Ease are about the corruption in her homeland including this one, which moves from the personal to the political.

Red DANIEL MERRIWEATHER

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yur15Brfvhs

Merriweather explained in publicity materials that this song "is about the blindness of war and the absence of compassion displayed by western administrations."

Red is an emotional track that catches every emotion of everybody who hears it. It’s somehow about being “perfect” as Daniel sings, “It took something perfect, to paint it red”. Along with the impressive arrangement, Daniel’s soulful, raspy vocals ventures into the whole track making it one of his finest".

Check My Brain ALICE IN CHAINS

90's heroes' ALICE IN CHAINS made another memorable comeback this year. Although never officially disbanding, the band was plagued by extended inactivity due to Layne Staley's problems with substance abuse, culminating in his death in 2002.They reunited in 2005 with new lead vocalist William DuVall and released Black Gives Way to Blue, their first studio album in 14 years, in September of this year.

CHECK MY BRAIN topped the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Rock Songs charts making it the first time an Alice in Chains song hit #1 since their 1994 single "No Excuses". The song received a nomination for "Best Hard Rock Performance" at the 52nd Grammy Awards.

Careless Whisper SEETHER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK-EgnboXHo

Talking about great cover songs!! This George Michael/Wham! song rendition was reportedly covered as a joke. The band's record company approached the rockers to do a song for Valentines day, so, as a joke, they turned a "Cheesy 80s pop balled" into a Hard Rock/Metal song.

"Careless Whisper" has gotten Seether lots of publicity. Hey! That's fine but please don't forget to thank georgie!!

Surf Solar FUCK BUTTONS

Fuck Buttons are a two-piece experimental group formed in Bristol, England in early 2004 by Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power.

Tarot Sport, their second studio album released in mid-October includes the lead single "Surf Solar," which unsurprisingly clocks in at over ten minutes on the album, comes to us here pared down in a sexy, bite-sized 3:42, melding a four-to-the-floor pulse to stuttering samples smeared with an intense, industrial and somewhat evil sonic sheen.

Treat Me Like Your Mother THE DEAD WEATHER

Vocalist Alison Mosshart and drummer Jack White explained to Billboard magazine that the origins of Dead Weather originated with a lost voice and a missing tour bus. During the fall of 2008, Mosshart's band, The Kills, were opening for the Raconteurs, when White lost his voice. Meanwhile the Kills' tour bus driver had disappeared with the group's bus. Mosshart remembered: "I was wearing the same clothes I'd been in for a week, because the bus still hadn't been found." (It turned up a few days later).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QSkI6My1g

To get their minds off their misfortunes, White suggested an impromptu end-of-tour jam session at his new Third Man studio-label complex in Nashville. He explained: "We had one day left with her before she had to go to New York and we were in Nashville together so we said, 'Why don't we record a 7-inch?' We had absolutely no energy left and were completely burned out." Raconteur bassist Jack Lawrence and guitarist Dean Fertita, a member of Queens of the Stone Age who tours with the Raconteurs, made up the jam quartet. Mosshart recalled: "We burned the candle at three ends, and all of a sudden we had four songs done. And then we just kept going and going, and all of a sudden, we were this new band with this new record. I couldn't believe how kind of natural it felt.

Hey Westberg!! This is your favorite song of 2009, right?

102
Machine REGINA SPEKTOR

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf3-4lJElH4

Inspired by George Orwell's classic book "1984", MACHINE is a creepy interpretation almost like a smiley doll is saying it or she is being forced to say it. AHHH! The new album is so great and this is my favorite of her new songs.

101

Music Is Through JAMIE CULLUM

Sure Michael Buble is "hawt" but not as super talented as Jamie Cullum. The british singer is an artist deserving of superlatives but more complex than a simple set of adjectives can depict. If you know him as "just" a jazz musician or from his strikingly creative way with cover versions (among them, Radiohead's 'High & Dry' and Pharrell's 'Frontin') you're just familiar with the tip of the iceberg.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PisK8kTbbno

MUSIC IS THROUGH is a house track that is bold, experimental and the best thing Cullum's done.

THE END OF A TRADITION (Christmas Anarchy in the UK!!)

Christmas Number One Singles are those that are at the top of the UK Singles Chart on the week before Christmas Day.

Christmas No. 1 songs are a big deal for musicians in Britain as they can lead to a surge in record sales and a place in history.
These songs are HUGE HITS and many of them has became The best-selling song of the year in recent years.

The Beatles are the only artist to have four Christmas number ones, three consecutively starting from 1963.

The Spice Girls equalled the record of having three consecutive Christmas number ones, from 1996 to 1998. "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, which reached the number one spot at Christmas 1975 and 1991, is the only record to have reached the top twice.

"Do They Know It's Christmas?" has been Christmas number one for three generations of Band Aid. The (original) Band Aid version of this song is the second best selling single in UK history.

From 2005 to 2008, the winners of the talent competition The X Factor (The British Version of AMERICAN IDOL) took the number one spot — beginning with Shayne Ward in 2005, followed by Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson and Alexandra Burke.

This trend was broken last Sunday when Rage Against The Machine's 1992 single "Killing in the name" became this year's Number One Christmas in The United Kingdom.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkuOAY-S6OY

Backed by a Facebook group with close to one million members, this powerful 90's anthem claimed the top spot on the British single chart on the last Sunday before Christmas.

Even more impressive, it was the first time in five years that a winner of Simon Cowell's show "X-Factor" failed to win.

"Killing in the name" sold 500,000 copies in one week to become the first ever Christmas number one that was only available by download.

"The Climb" by "X-Factor" winner Joe McEdlerry sold 450,000 copies to come in second.

Jon and Tracy Morter founded the Facebook group in early December with the goal of making the RATM's song the No. 1 single in Britian

After the creator of The X Factor, Simon Cowell, publicly denounced the campaign as "stupid" and "cynical", the group has been mentioned on various UK news channels, radio stations and website blogs.

Alongside these Facebook group, a JustGiving page was created to raise money for UK homeless charity Shelter.

The campaign has also been supported by Rage Against the Machine themselves. Guitarist Tom Morello said that achieving the Christmas number one was a "wonderful dose of anarchy" and that he plans to donate some of the unexpected windfall to charity. Foo Fighter's Dave Grohl, Sir Paul McCartney, and the band Muse also pledged their support for the campaign.

Impressed by the successful campaign of this couple of complete strangers, Simon Cowell offered them a job and guess what? They declined...YESSSSS!!

As well as knocking Cowell off his throne, the Morters also raised $101,829 for the homeless charity Shelter.

FELIZ NAVIDAD Everyone!!
