TOTO is not The Greatest Band of All Times but...

I know that the American band Toto is not the most accurate example of great music in the 80's and after that valuable comment in the WE NEED A MUSIC REVOLUTION post, I feel that I have to expose my point of view.

With a little help from my childhood friend Rene these are some reasons that I've found to consider Toto a GREAT AMERICAN BAND...

  • Even when I never said that they are the Greatest Band of All Times( I just referred them as a MULTI-TALENTED band), I think Toto is the most popular and experienced session musicians of the era. The great Eddie Van Halen describe them as "collectively the best musicians on the planet".

  • They created beautiful musical compositions that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B, and jazz, making them appeal to a variety of musicians and non-musician listeners. Here's some proof of that:

"HOLD THE LINE" (1978)

"99" (1979)

"I'LL BE OVER YOU" (1986)
  • With "Toto IV", the band delivered one of the most commercially successful records of the 80s.
IV was awarded with 3 Grammy Awards, including RECORD OF THE YEAR for "Rosanna", ALBUM OF THE YEAR and PRODUCER OF THE YEAR.

  • In the video for "Rosanna", a young Patrick Swayze can be seen as one of the dancers, and a young Cynthia Rhodes (former member of Animotion and wife of Richard Marx)can be seen as the lead dancer. The song was named after Steve Porcaro's ex-girlfriend, actress Rosanna Arquette, but the song itself was not about her, according to writer David Paich.
"ROSANNA" (1982)
  • "Africa" became Toto's only #1 song in America and it's considered one of the most important of the 80's.

  • The video for "A stranger in town" is one of the most artistically beautiful of the 80's combining a conceptual cinematography with a well driven film direction. The images of the last scenes of this video have remained vivid in my memory after all these years. It's impossible to forget that scene when the stranger is caught by the cops while he was reading the bible to the kids. And that shadow of his open arms body resembling the image of a crucified Jesus.
"STRANGER IN TOWN" (1984)

  • The late Jeff Porcaro, founding member of Toto, is considered one of the best drummers in the history of rock music. In his career he played with hundreds of world-class artists (including Roger Waters). The shuffle pattern in "Rosanna" involved "ghost notes" played by lightly bouncing the stick on the snare between backbeats. This was not an original technique (made famous originally by Bernard Purdie and John Bonham), but Jeff's mastery of it brought it to the forefront.

  • Toto LOVE women and that's something that I appreciate in the work of an artist. Not only they want to see and contemplate Rosanna's eyes when they wake up in the morning , they beg Pamela for a second chance and even tell the story of sweet Holyanna who has a secret "42nd St night shift" to hide from her mom.

"HOLYANNA" (1985)

"PAMELA" (1988)

  • Even when their fanbase is significantly greater in Europe and Asia than in the United States, they had a succesful comeback in 2001 when DJ Roger Sanchez sampled their song “I won’t hold you back” in the worldwide smash hit song "Another Chance". The video of this song tells the story of the girl with the big heart wandering the streets of Manhattan looking for love. This is by far my favorite video of this decade.

  • Perhaps this band will never have a significant success in the States and this is something that Toto's guitar player knows:

"Hey, what can I say? Its not OUR fault! Its not YOUR fault. I wish I had an answer but I don't. I am bummed too. No one likes to admit defeat. Fuck, it makes no sense considering it all. The press killed us and made us look like some soft pussy band like the fucking Partridge family. That is NOT who and what we are..."

"We have tried EVERY possible way in and door slams. We are all tired and need some time off. Hell, I will be daddy any day now. I have a great life, we kill just about any of our peers overseas so what the fuck? Its a big world, MUCH bigger than the USA. I am almost done living here anyways. I think a nice house overlooking the ocean in the south of France or Italy would be nice. I wouldn't have to travel as far to make my living.

We REALLY appreciate all you guys and God Bless y'all"

SOUNDTRACK OF A SITUATION, The Wings

This is a new section in my blog that it's been created to share some videos and songs that find a peculiar meaning in my daily life while listening to my ipod.

These songs had defined memories or just make me think of a melodic theme for different types of situations.

The first SOS is dedicated to actor Heath Ledger that died this afternoon.

This is the main theme of the BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN movie titled 'THE WINGS".

It was composed by the great GUSTAVO SANTAOLALLA, that has produced the most amazing spanish rock music albums released in the last 15 years.

His musical composition for this movie along with the beautiful theme song performed by Emmylou Harris, "A LOVE THAT WILL NEVER GROW OLD", won the Academy Awards and even when the gay cowboy story didn't get the Oscar for Best Motion Picture, the love of Ellis and Jack will remain inmortal in our memories.

GOODBYE ENNIS DEL MAR...

It's been a strange time for me since I came back from a short trip to Florida. I've been feeling very lonely and sad lately...
This might be one of the reasons why I haven't wrote anything and just when I was planning to post a couple of notes on my blog, including a new daily section I heard the bad news...
Heath Ledger was found dead in a NYC apartment.
God only know what was on his mind minutes before his soul left this world.
His short but promising career leaves that impeccable performance in that cowboy love story that will always be remembered as the most beautiful and sincere of our times...
Rest in Peace Heath Ledger...

WE NEED A MUSIC REVOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!

Aren't you tired of the same music that the local radio stations play?
Thanks god for the internet that allow us to discover new artists and better options.

But seriously, what's up with all that crappy hip hop music, the stupid bubble gum pop songs and the emo-punk rocker wannabes bands that you over hear not only on the radio but in the MTV channel "NEW GENERATION" shows ( The Hills, Kaya, etc).

I'M SO SICK OF IT!!

I hope that this year we stop listening to these lame songs that has been invading the charts for more than 8 years already.
It's not that I hate all these music! Don't get me wrong...
God bless Outkast, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Kanye and Missy but what about all these MFs that are contaminating the radio stations with stupid songs that scream I like your booty, I drive a million dollar car and take showers with Crist-ALL .

The #1 in the nation right now is a guy named FLO RIDA. He is like a younger version of LL Cool J, fact that is good for my eyes, (If you know what I mean?) but come on!!! Haven't we heard enough of getting LOW?

And yes I did the TO THE WINDOW, TO THE WALL dance in 2003 but enough of "getting low" songs!!

We need a new music revolution full of high quality songs!
Maybe is because I'm an 80's kid... I miss those days when the Top 10 of the Billboard Magazine was full of a nice variety of great songs of different styles.
Music, lyrics and rhythms were so diverse, colorful and vibrant.
Remember the time when popular music was also good music? :

During the winter of '87 The Bangles showed us how to WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN...
Back in 1983, Aussies Men at Work, Soul God Marvin Gaye and multitalent band Toto were powerful music icons with amazing classic songs like "Down Under", "Sexual Healing" and "Africa"respectively.

Please bring back the good music!!

Here's some GOOD music that I recommend for this season:

Be very aware of the new wave of female songwritters that has been promoting their impressive work for the last 6 months:

Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat, A Fine Frenzy, Ingrid Michaelson, Bat for Lashes and my favorites from last year Kate Nash and Adele.

Nash is the artist of the month for MTV (which is kind of weird 'cause I haven't watched any of her videos on that channel) and Adele has been selected by international music critics, editors and broadcasters as the Best New Act for this 2008.

If you got a copy of my TOP 100 SONGS of 2007, you will find Kate's "Foundations" and Adele's "Hometown glory" included in this playlist.
(Please ask me for a copy of this CD - Music Countdown If you haven't got it yet.)

I leave you with another short list of singers, songs and bands that will make big noise during this new year's season:

READY FOR THE FLOOR by Hot Chip
(First new single from their new album "MADE IN THE DARK" to be release sometime during the springtime)

(Another Best New Act to watch in 2008)

FLASHING LIGHTS by Kanye West Ft. Dwele

CHASING PAVEMENTS by Adele

PUMPKIN SOUP by Kate Nash

IF I HAD EYES by Jack Johnson
(Already # 1 song in my country aka PERUVIAN SUMMER ANTHEM of 2008)

TOP 10 MOMENTS OF 2007

These are my favorite moments from last year.
There were good, bad, happy and sad moments.

Some of these sad times that I didn't include will stay in my memory.
These are moments that I won't forget (The lost of my grandma Oti, my aunt Fa and uncle Gino) and moments that I will leave in the past (Earthquake in Peru).

10. DRAMA IN BOSTON.
It was a crazy weekend during the summer where I lost friends, made new friends and re-affirmed my friendship with old friends.

9.D.C.
It was my first time in the Capital City. I had so much fun and believe it or not there was drama too...

8.CLAM CHOWDER IN FISHERMAN'S WHARF.

Whenever you are in San Francisco go to the Fisherman's Wharf in the Bay Area and try this delicious chowder. Best Meal that I have ever had in my time in America.

7.ROAD TRIP IN THE WEST COAST.

It was like a "Thelma and Louise" kind of road trip but without the sad ending. My buddy Ruben and I spent such an awesome time in Palm Springs, Phoenix and Nevada. One more reason to say that WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS, STAYS IN VEGAS...

6.THE JOSHUA TREE.

On my way to Palm Springs I found what I was looking for...

5.THE CASTRO.

Colourful and friendly city. Exactly how I imagined it. I spent the best of my time during this year in that area where I discovered nice places to eat and shop, made good friends and had lots of fun.

4.CONCERTS.

Amy Winehouse got drunk, The Klaxons conquered, Julieta Venegas fue para mi, Cafe Tacuba cantaron muy bien, Travis brought back my 90's nostalgia, M.I.A. sang to Jimmy, Bjork made me cry and Arcade Fire became my all time favorite band.

3.BIKE RIDE TO THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE.
Perhaps the most beautiful sightseeing that I have had in the last 5 years...

2.QUALITY TIME WITH PAPO.

Nothing makes me happier than spending quality time with my handsome cuban man.

1.SPENDING "ME" TIME.
It will always be the best therapy and also my best way to see that EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT...
