Razorlight is an English-Swedish indie rock band formed in 2002. They are primarily known in their home countries."Wire to Wire" was written by singer Johnny Borrell, for their third album Slipway Fires.
This piano-led track, is an amazing "slow-burning" tune. (What is love but the strangest of feelings?)

Island THE BPA FT. JUSTIN ROBERTSON
The man best known as Fatboy Slim remodelled himself as The BPA (Brighton Port Authority). He also has one of the coolest album titles ever, edging out his latest Fatboy title, Dance Bitch. "I think we're gonna need a bigger boat" is Roy Scheider's fabulously dry observation after tangling with the giant shark in Jaws, and it earns Cook huge points via classic cinema cred.
This awesome song squanders a strong base and features the vocals of the British DJ, remixer and electronic music producer Justin Robertson.
You won't see this song charted in any "Best of the year " list. It's my personal favorite tune of 09'.

Gary Go is considered "The One Man Coldplay" by the british critics. This life-affirming song was the first tune that Go wrote for his debut album. In an interview with Safe Davis transcribed on his website, Gary Go explained: "I wrote it on my favorite piano at my favorite studio in New Jersey USA, right by where that miracle plane landing happened recently on The Hudson river. I was feeling down and I wrote the song about feeling down and finding a way out of the darkness."

Kiss Of Life FRIENDLY FIRES
Frontman Ed Macfarlane told the NME June 27th 2009 that this song was inspired by Brazilian music. He explained: "All the rhythms are traditional samba rhythms. All our brass layers from our recent tour drum for the London School Of Samba, so they've been giving us some ideas."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK0H3jEwUYc
Macfarlane had the idea to sample and loop samba drums while hanging out at London's Brazilian club Guanabara. He enthused to The Guardian August 22, 2009: "There's nothing like hearing a huge troupe of drummers playing this massive rhythm, surrounded by beautiful dancing girls in amazing attire and everyone screaming their heads off," he enthuses. "It's dance music at its most exciting and energetic. It had the atmosphere of the best techno raves."

Symphonies DAN BLACK
This song seems to borrow the intro drum sequence from Rihanna's Umbrella, but that's not a criticism: it's a funky snare/cymbal combination. Though that shouldn't define the song - it's a rather epic song, containing string sections and an accompanying video which sees Black falling into a stack of movie moments.
Towards each chorus, Black's voice sounds like he's been possessed by the ghost of Daft Punk, which lends an interesting aspect to the song, which is already a multi-layered slice of pop genius. I really could listen to this over and over again.
Enjoy the video, it should whet your appetite for the weirdly titled album ((un)). I don't think there's anybody else making music this interesting at the moment. Thumbs up.

We Are The People EMPIRE OF THE SUN
Empire of the Sun are singer Luke Steele, of critically lauded but commercially unsuccessful Aussie indie band The Sleepy Jackson, and fellow Australian Nick Littlemore of house duo Pnau. The duo took their name from the JG Ballard novel, which Steven Spielberg made into a cinema film in 1987.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a47Y1lCRHlM
The duo are both committed Christians and in an interview with The Sunday Times February 1, 2009, Luke Steele described the music as "our ministry." Steele went on to tell a story about the making of the song's video, which used the ancient Mexican festival Day of the Dead as an inspiration and was partly shot in a church in the Mexican desert:
"Nick and I went in that morning and prayed, and it had this quiet energy. We filmed a segment and it was beautiful, holy. Suddenly, the whole church starts to fill up with the director and crew. Everyone is cussing and smoking and making a noise. The next thing we know — boom! All the lights start making this terrible screeching sound, and it won't stop. The producer, a Mexican guy, turns to me and says, 'We should go.'"

New York PALOMA FAITH
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvXeUqlfxhY
Faith was born in London to a Spanish father and an English mother. She is an ex-magician’s assistant, trained contemporary dancer, and performer in burlesque dancing with experience as an actress. She recently introduced music into the equation, at first mimicking the blues and soul singers she admired, but eventually found her own voice.
Her sound has been likened to that of the Brit School embodying the style of Amy Winehouse and Katie Melua. Though she didn't train at Brit School, Faith came into contact with Winehouse when she turned down a place in her backing band. Her songs echo "the same soul and heartbreak" of Winehouse.
The lyrics of this song tell the tale of a girl who loses a guy to "another lady", but sadly for Paloma the lass in question isn't a flesh-and-blood adversary, but actually the Big Apple. It's a much bigger target of course, but one that's harder to hit with a swinging vintage handbag. (Wink, wink!!)

This was the lead single and opening track of French rock band Phoenix's fourth studio album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BJDNw7o6so
Phoenix singer Thomas Mars told the Washington DC free newspaper Express about this song:
"We liked the idea that it's just a mash-up, that our songs bring in influences from everywhere. I think that Franz Liszt was one of them; there were other things, visuals. And maybe it was the fact that we grew up in Versailles and we were surrounded by historical things. Maybe they came back that way."

Untouchable GIRLS ALOUD
Can't imagine a world without the Girls Aloud. I had enough when the Spice Girls started to have personal conflicts in the late 90's. I didn't care when they became four and then five with a comeback tour in 2008. The Girls Aloud made me forgot the "spicy" years but just to hear that they would partake in a year-long hiatus to pursue solo projects makes me so anxious!!
Girls! PLEASE COME BACK SOON!!!
Untouchable was the latest song released from their most recent album OUT OF CONTROL and it has been reported that an online campaign was launched to get Untouchable into the top ten.
When the single was initially released in 2009, its highest UK chart position at number 11 ended the band’s record breaking run of consecutive top ten hits.

Wild Horses SUSAN BOYLE
Never judge a book by its cover! That's what my grandpa always used to say.
And that was the lesson that the great SuBo taught us in 2009!
An underdog being ridiculed or humiliated but then enjoying an unexpected triumph is a common trope in literature, and the stark contrast between the audience's low expectations and the quality of her singing made Boyle's performance such an engaging piece of television.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxPZh4AnWyk&feature=related
Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful voice and her plain appearance on stage. The juxtaposition of the audience's first impression of her with the standing ovation she received during and after her performance led to an international media and Internet response.
By the end of 2009 her debut album became one of the most selling titles of the end of the decade.

Fireflies OWL CITY
The surprise #1 of 2009, this song seemed to come from nowhere to top the Billboard Hot 100.
Owl City is an electronica/pop project of Adam Young. The Minnesota native started out making music in his parents' basement, because of problems sleeping and this song appears to be about his insomnia.
"About two years ago I was working at a Coca-Cola warehouse all day. It allowed me to sort of dream up these projects. One wound up being Owl City. I thought through how I wanted it to sound, how I wanted the records to look, everything. Sometimes working in a monotonous environment can really free up your imagination."
Recording in a windowless basement also helped said Young.
He explained:
"A lot of it has to do with me being by myself while creating it; no producers, no engineers. And that approach allows me to think more freely, I think." He added that he used simple decorations to inspire his creativity. "I have a lot of landscape paintings to look at; lots of ethereal, dreamy nature photography. Having that stuff around really creeps in subconsciously to impact the music."
Here's a totally useless fact: FIREFLIES by OWL CITY was the first chart-topper with an animal in its title by an artist with an animal in his/her's name since the Chipmunks' "The Chipmunk Song" in 1958.

The White Lies were my favorite rock band of 2009 and their debut album one of my favorites.
Their doom-laden rock is full of references to plane crashes, murders, funerals, kidnappings and nervous breakdowns.
They killed off their previous art-rock incarnation Fear Of Flying in 2006 and chose the name White Lies because, like their new miserablist sound, it represented something "seemingly innocent" with "very dark undertones".
Unfinished Business is about a boyfriend's ghost trying to communicate with the girlfriend who murdered him and has now taken to self harm. It's sort of their most humorous song. Well… in a way.

The Reeling PASSION PIT
Unquestionably one of the greatest songs of 2009!
Passion Pit was originally formed in late 2007 by Michael Angelakos in Buffalo, as a project to write a few songs for his girlfriend as a Valentine's Day present. The band is now based in Boston. Michael Angelakos actually burned copies of the songs in his room and sold them on campus for $4 a pop. The idea for the project happened when Michael performed the songs alone at school with his laptop. Ian caught his performance and thought the songs would sound great performed live by a band. The seed was planted and then the project progressed from there to form Passion Pit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U-Ul5qnLeQ
The slang Passion Pit is derived from traditional Variety-speak used in the Hollywood industry publication. The trade used the slang to refer to drive-in theatres, because of their privacy and romantic allure for teenagers. Michael Angelakos came up with the "project" name because he thought it was funny, but little did he know that this "project" would be his most successful one and that the name would stick.

Ready For The Weekend CALVIN HARRIS
Once my anthem of the end of summer of 2009, this awesome dance tune's chorus features Mary Pearce singing "Oooh, I put on my shoes and I'm ready for the weekend." She's got this great big voice and it's like a nod to an old dance classic.
This dance diva had previously worked with the likes of Lionel Richie and Chaka Khan, but was hardly a household name when she recorded the hook for this song. Calvin Harris pleaded poverty as the explanation why he hooked up with a unfamiliar singer for this song.
"I wanted someone I could bung £250 to and never hear from again. Royalties are few and far between these days – I just got my iTunes statement through and to be honest with you it doesn't even cover a packet of Fruit Pastilles. I'm on my arse, mate."

The most fascinating artist of 2009. This is the first of 5 songs included in this countdown. Just Dance and Poker Face were the two The Fame cuts that preceded this one to the top. The two other acts to achieve this feat were Swedish pop group Ace Of Base, who reigned consecutively in 1993-94 on Mainstream Top 40 with three tracks from their debut LP The Sign, and Canadian artist Avril Lavigne, who repeated the feat in 2002-03 with a trio of tracks from her debut release Let Go.

Party In The U.S.A. MILEY CYRUS
If George Bush didn't care for black people, Miley doesn't care for their listeners.
This song was written by Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson collaborators Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly. However, it was still a surprise when, in an interview the singer expressed ignorance about one of the lines in this song. A reporter asked her which Jay-Z hit inspired the lyric about a Hov hit saving her life, to which Miley replied:
"I don't know, I didn't write the song, so I have no idea. Honestly, I picked that song because I needed something to go with my clothing line. I didn't write it and I didn't expect it to be popular, originally. It was just something that I wanted to do and I needed some songs and it turned out for the best."
The reporter then asked Miley if she can agree with the song's sentiment. Cyrus answered:
"I've never heard a Jay-Z song. I don't listen to pop music. 'Party ' is not even my style of music. I'm really blessed for it to have done as well as it has. Totally blessed. God has definitely put me in an amazing position with amazing people."
In a chart co-incidence on the Billboard Hot 100 dated October 31, 2009, the three artists lined up back-to-back-to-back: This song ranked at #3, followed by Jay-Z's "Run This Town" at #4 and Spears' "3" at #5.

Another great 2009 newcomer band. The xx is a band from England formed in 2005.
This song fits perfectly in the nearly flawless album the xx has created. It follows the general theme of losing something/ giving something up (probably love) that all the other songs on the album do. I love the loud clap, symbol smash, or whatever it is during the chorus. Just smoke a little reef and listen to this album, tranquility will ensue.
INFINITY reminds me of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak, the same kind of guitars and it has a certain sparseness about it (just like the rest of the album by the way, I always picture endless miles of road whenever I hear their music).

The video opens up to what has to be the coolest dinner theatre ever and Karen O sporting one of the funkiest outfits I’ve encountered in a while. The rest of the video’s short 3 minutes involves a Thriller-esque Michael Jackson move-jocking dancing werewolf massacring the poor dinner theatre audience Quentin Tarantino style, with a twist — instead of red corn syrup gushing out of the dismembered victim, it’s a shiny, bright red confetti bloodbath.

White Horse TAYLOR SWIFT
Taylor Swift told CMT that this song was an example of her fascination with fairy tales. She explained:
"I am completely fascinated by the differences and comparisons between real life and fairy tales because we're raised as little girls to think that we're a princess and that Prince Charming is going to sweep us off our feet. And that we're going to ride off into the sunset on a white horse. We're not really expecting to get blown off or ignored or broken up with or cheated on. ... I think it's really interesting when you come to terms with that reality: 'Maybe that's not gonna happen with this guy because this guy's a jerk.' But there's still that core of us that believes that it's true and that if you find the right person, you can have that love story and it can work out. So there are different examples of fairy tales, and sometimes I believe in them and sometimes I don't. And moments on the record like in "White Horse," it's a song about, 'Wow, this is not a fairy tale, is it? Awesome. Great.' It's (about how) I'm coming to this realization that this is not a fairy tale at all -- this is real life."

BLUE SKIES captures the essence of the album, which is about the demise of frontman Charlie Fink's relationship with former band member turned singer-songwriter Laura Marling. Their affair ended with her dumping him, and much of The First Days of Spring album tells how Fink's love for Marling clinged long after she'd finished the relationship and of his effort to shake it off. This optimistic track is near the end of the album, by which time Fink was beginning to move on.

Kasabian were named after Linda Kasabian, the young pregnant girl who drove the car in which Charles Manson and his family escaped after the Tate-LaBianca murders. She subsequently was the star witness at their murder trial.
This was the lead single from English alternative band Kasabian's third studio album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum.
Singer Tom Meighan commented to The Guardian May 29, 2009 on this song that lurches in mood, tempo and rhythm. He described it as flipping out; if the song were a person, he would be nice, "then he's got a hammer in his hand the next minute."

If memory serves, and it usually does, the Gossip aren’t doing anything usual or despicable, and this is not another one of Ditto’s fuckeries. On the a-a-a-a-a-al-co-hol!
Holiday DIZZEE RASCAL
The Tongue N' Cheek album marked Dizzee Rascal's move away from his Grime roots, in favour of more mainstream Pop music.
He explained to The Daily Telegraph August 10, 2009:
"'I live in a country house now, big pond, big fish, big whatever, and when I first moved in, I had a little pool party kind of thing. Where I lived before I didn't really invite anyone round, but this time there were about 20 people there, and I suddenly realised that what I needed to do was make an album you could play all the way through without spoiling the party."
'Holiday' is a totally cheesy but totally harmless, fun song. It's designed to give people that are on holiday a great excuse to dance madly and us folks back home in Britain who need that holiday an even greater one. This song hasn't got the explosive feel that 'Bonkers' has and thus it doesn't have the same sense of longevity, but what it does have is a very now feel.

I Remember (Original Mix) DEADMAU5 & KASKADE
Toronto native Joel Zimmerman, more commonly known as Deadmau5 (pronounced "dead-mouse") has gone from relative obscurity just three short years ago to super-stardom and one of the highest profiles in dance music. His genre is hard to pin down: sometimes it sounds like progressive house, other times like trance, other times like techno.
Zimmerman brings in fellow producer and superstar house DJ Kaskade for this track. This track is already a certifiable hit for both Kaskade and Deadmau5, and its danceable yet relaxing lounge house-like feel shows why.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6efMW6a5mFI
“I Remember” sets the stage for what many probably would consider one his most strongly produced track. Deadmau5 is on fire again with this huge vocal track. The haunting vocal of Haley Gibby has you a million miles away whilst the space age keys and tight rhythm keep you locked in. For anyone not fond of vocals there is handy instrumental in the package too.
To be continued...
